How to Write Better AI Clip-Art Prompts: 7 Details That Make a Difference

A good AI image prompt does not need to sound technical. It simply needs to describe your idea clearly enough for the image generator to understand what matters.

If you have ever typed something short such as “cute cat clip art” and received a strange or disappointing picture, the problem may be missing information rather than a bad idea.

The easiest way to improve a clip-art prompt is to build it from seven small parts. You can use all seven when you want plenty of control, or choose only the ones that matter for a simpler design.

1. Start with the main subject

Say exactly what the picture should show.

Instead of asking for “flowers”, try “a small bouquet of lavender, daisies and forget-me-nots”.

Adding the number, type, age or important features of the subject can prevent the generator from making a very general image.

2. Describe the pose or action

Tell the generator what your subject is doing and which way it is facing.

A cat could be sitting, stretching, sleeping in a basket or looking over its shoulder.

For a still object, describe its position. For example:

  • A teacup viewed from the side

  • A book lying open

  • Three pumpkins arranged in a gentle curve

3. Choose an art style

Style words change the whole feeling of an image.

Watercolour can feel soft and handmade. Flat vector art can look bold and modern. Coloured pencil can feel playful, while vintage storybook art can create a nostalgic mood.

Use one clear main style so the result does not become confused.

4. Pick a colour palette

Colours help a collection feel planned and coordinated.

You might ask for dusty lilac, warm cream and deep plum. Alternatively, you could choose a seasonal palette such as burnt orange, sage green and golden brown.

If there is a particular colour you do not want in the picture, say that too.

5. Add a mood

Mood words guide the expression, lighting and small decorative details.

Useful mood words include:

  • Cheerful

  • Cosy

  • Peaceful

  • Whimsical

  • Elegant

  • Magical

  • Gently spooky

One or two mood words are usually enough.

6. Explain the background

For flexible clip art, ask for an isolated subject on a clean white background.

You can also request a transparent background if your chosen tool supports it. However, always check the exported file. Some generators create a grey-and-white checked pattern that only looks transparent.

If you want a small scene instead, describe the setting without letting it overpower the main subject.

7. Include practical finishing details

Useful finishing instructions include:

  • Centred composition

  • Complete object visible

  • Generous space around the edges

  • Crisp outline

  • No text

  • No border

  • No watermark

  • No cropped details

These instructions are especially helpful when you plan to remove the background or arrange several elements together.

Put the seven parts together

Here is an example of a complete prompt:

“A cheerful black cat sitting beside a terracotta pot of lavender, hand-drawn watercolour clip-art style, dusty lilac and sage green palette, gentle magical mood, isolated on a clean white background, centred composition, complete paws and tail visible, no text or border.”

Treat your first result as a draft.

If the picture is nearly right, change only the part that is wrong. Keeping the rest of the prompt steady makes it easier to learn which words are helping.
